Where:
Microsoft-Houston Offices (2000 West Sam Houston Parkway)
When:
June 7 (first Tuesday of each month) - 6:00 – 8:00PM
Why:
A free discussion on the latest Microsoft designer and developer technologies

This special interest group (SIG) is a community effort open to all interested participants. Each month, a different presenter from various organizations will present to interested attendees. The group is dedicated to exploring modern user experiences (UX) which are part computer programming and part artistic design. While traditionally there has been little overlap in the two disciplines, users now expect a good experience with a professional look. Covered topics will range from development in Silverlight, WPF and related technologies such as Microsoft Surface to design of rich interactive experience for graphical designers. The group strives to provide a good balance of content that appeals to both developers and designers.

This month's meeting will be presented by Claudio Lassala from EPS Software Corp

Session will be:
Data Binding in WPF
Data Binding is one of the main features in WPF. This session covers an introduction to how data binding works in WPF, going from simple binding through value converters and validation, as well as show how binding can be used for more than just binding the Text property on a TextBox to a property on some sort of data class.

RSVP Requested
Attendance of the SIG meetings is free. To allow us to plan the meetings better and to judge interest ahead of time, we ask people to RSVP at:

Presentation Abstract:

Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 (WSS), the 'V8-Hemi' engine for Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007, allows any organization to quickly setup a collaboration platform for their users with no cost for WSS; just the use of an available Windows Server 2003 with a SQL 2005 database. WSS helps teams stay connected and productive by providing easy access to the people, documents, and information they need to make more informed decisions and get the job done.

In this high-level presentation we'll walk through the framework of a WSS setup including security, the point-and-click interface for managing and building out sites for your users, along with how your users can learn to collaborate and share information that is readily available to all but security-trimmed as well. As time allows we'll talk about the potholes and pitfalls of running WSS/SharePoint installations and how to continually build the 'collaboration experience'.

About the Presenter:

Craig Pilkenton is a SharePoint engineer leading MassMutual's collaboration and social networking efforts, and has been living in both the developer and IT Pro worlds for the last 13 years. During this time he has built many different business applications in C#, ASP.NET, TSQL, and Windows Powershell, along with supporting many Microsoft platforms such as SQL Server 2000/2005 with Reporting Services, Windows Servers, and most recently Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 installations. Craig is also an MCTP for Windows Share

Community Megaphone Events Feed

<geo:lat>42.1667850</geo:lat><geo:long>-72.5788960</geo:long><dc:coverage>MA</dc:coverage>

Midlands PASS Chapter July Meeting

This event will be held on: 7/7/2009 at 6:15 PM, Eastern Time

Address: 250 BerryHoll Road
City: Columbia
State: SC
Zip Code: 29210

Description:
Midlands PASS welcomes SQL Server MVP John Welch. Hudson Akridge familiarizes us with the Fluent NHibernate project, which aims at simplifying NHibernate's configuration.

Hudson's talk was one of the best reviewed in the recent Chicago Code Camp and will no doubt make you happy to leave those XML mapping files behind.

Fluent NHibernate is a framework, that sits on top of NHibernate, which helps to cut down on some of the headaches you will indubitably encounter with picking up such a mature ORM. We'll be discussing how FNH can help cut down the learning curve of using NHibernate as an ORM and how it can benefit existing NHibernate production environments long term.

Hudson Akridge is currently a developer on the Fluent NHibernate team, maintains the tool "NHibernate Query Analyzer", and uses both NHibernate and Fluent in the day to day of a large production environment.

Community Megaphone Events Feed

<geo:lat>41.8790080</geo:lat><geo:long>-87.6366550</geo:long><dc:coverage>IL</dc:coverage>

RockNUG Release 3.1

This event will be held on: 7/8/2009 at 6:30 PM, Eastern Time

Address: 51 Mannakee Street
City: Rockville
State: MD
Zip Code: 20850

Description:
WPF - Hello World and Beyond

presented by David Makogon

Yes, WPF lets you do some cool things with animation, but it is also platform for building real world applications. This presentation will start in shallow end of WPF basics and then dive deeper to into architecture. It will cover the following topics

    * Why move from WinForms to WPF? Pros vs. (almost no) con's.
    * WPF architecture overview: what to know, what to embrace, etc.
    * Pattern focus: ViewModel
    * WPF vs. Silverlight (strictly from a feature perspective): What advantages and disadvantages are there?
    * Introduction to CompositeWPF: This one goes to 11.

The ASP.NET MVC Framework provides a powerful Model View Controller (MVC) approach to building web applications, and provides separation of concerns, increased testability, control over HTML output, and intuitive URLs. We will start by looking at building a model framework with LINQ to SQL, including validation and model binding. Then, we'll explore a custom generics-based repository and services implementation. Finally, we'll tie it all together with a look at Views and jQuery.

Community Megaphone Events Feed

<geo:lat>36.7630070</geo:lat><geo:long>-76.2632900</geo:long><dc:coverage>VA</dc:coverage>

Presenter Mentor

This event will be held on: 7/15/2009 at 11:30 AM, Central Time

Address: 7000 State Highway 161
City: Irving
State: TX
Zip Code: 75039

Description:
The goal of Presenter Mentor is to grow local talent into capable and confident technical speakers thru a highly-interactive and focused gathering. One of the biggest obstacles to a rapid migration is the DTS package issue. To gain the performance benefits and a supported path forward for the functionality in DTS, these packages should be converted into native SSIS. As we all know, the conversion is NOT straightforward. SSIS is more powerful and significantly different from DTS.

Pragmatic Works has been deeply involved in helping enterprises move to SQL 2005 and convert DTS to SSIS for several years. The presentation will cover the follow key points:

Introduction to SSIS and its differences vs. DTS

Options for running existing DTS packages in SSIS

32 bit compatibility mode

ActiveX scripting tasks

SQLOLEDB to SQL Native Client

VB or C#

Advantages of SSIS over DTS

Performance

Business Intelligence Development Studio (BIDS)

Options for converting DTS packages to native SSIS

Manual Rewrite

Automated Conversion Tools

Microsoft Wizard

DTS xChange

Adding value to packages during the conversion process

Auditing frameworks

Monitoring

Notification

Consolidated Connections

Null Handling

Standard Naming Convention for Connections

Warning and Error Validation

Checkpoints

Transactions

Using Configuration Files to centralize references

Assessing the scope of a DTS conversion project

How many packages do I have?

How complex are they?

Which packages are no longer used?

How much time and money will this take?

Tools for Assessing project scope and cost

Demonstration of Microsoft Wizard

Demonstration of DTS Profiler

Demonstration of DTS xChange

Pragmatic Work’s DTS xChange tool will be used to convert DTS packages

Unit testing is an important part of your development cycle, but acceptance testing ensures your software meets your project’s requirements. This session shows you two great tools to help write automated acceptance tests: Selenium and Cucumber. You’ll learn how to use these tools to start from a requirement and move through a user story to an acceptance test. You’ll see how Selenium IDE cuts your development time by recording tests automatically for you, and you’ll discover how Selenium RC lets you use one set of tests to evaluate multiple browsers. Finally, we’ll walk through using Cucumber to write a plain-text description on how your system should behave – and use that same file to drive an acceptance test! We’ll discuss how these tools fit in your development process, and how they can be included in automated builds. This session will leave you with an understanding of how these tools can help you boost your quality and ensure you’re meeting your system’s functional requirements.

Kilimanjaro Room at the Charlotte Microsoft Campus to learn how to make your code bullet proof by our very own Eric Notheisen. Developing for Dollars, our year-long focus on providing you with the skills to create successful applications and connecting you with the right organizations to make money from your work, continues. Most developers want to see their code go through system testing without error. Having a logic error may be the result of poor requirements. Having a data error is a function of the data. But having your code blow up in the middle of testing is just an embarrassment. When you develop automated tests that are observable, measurable and repeatable you can be pretty sure your code will meet the needs of the application. In this presentation you will learn the basics of using the nUnit testing application incorporated in Visual Studio. These basics include how to develop nUnit test and get the best results from your testing. It will also include the limitations of testing with nUnit and reporting the results. Our speaker is Eric Notheisen. Eric is a Senior Consultant with CGI. He has been working in IT for most of his 42 year career. Prior to joining CGI he was an Applications Developer on contract to the Lash Group. As a software developer, Eric develops Windows and Web applications using a wide variety of programming languages. Eric also teaches Visual Basic and C# for Central Piedmont Community College Eric holds graduate and undergraduate degrees from the University of Northern Colorado and the Community College of the Air Force. Eric and his wife Diane live in Fort Mill, SC.

Community Megaphone Events Feed

<geo:lat>35.1399360</geo:lat><geo:long>-80.9231690</geo:long><dc:coverage>NC</dc:coverage>

SQL Server 2008 for Developer

This event will be held on: 7/28/2009 at 6:00 PM, Central Time

Address: 7000 State Highway 161; 1st Floor Conference Room
City: Irving
State: TX
Zip Code: 75039

Description:
Peter's latest book is availabe for FREE as an ebook from Microsoft Press - Introducing Microsoft SQL Server 2008.

Code Camps are held all across the country and are community events where technical professionals and those with aspirations to join the technical workforce come together to learn from and network with their peers, sponsors, and leading technical resources in many disciplines. You can expect to gain lots of knowledge, have incredible networking opportunities, enjoy plenty of food, and to be eligible for some amazing prizes. The basic format of Code Camp is that of a traditional conference, however this is a very interactive conference and we would like to think a bit more fun than the average training you might experience elsewhere.

Community Megaphone Events Feed

<geo:lat>30.2725590</geo:lat><geo:long>-81.5073350</geo:long><dc:coverage>FL</dc:coverage>

Virtualization Group–Boston Monthly Meeting

This event will be held on: 9/8/2009 at 6:00 PM, Eastern Time

Address: Microsoft Office -- 201 Jones Rd., Sixth Floor
City: Waltham
State: MA
Zip Code: 02451

Description:
Virtualization Boston Monthly Meeting Monthly Meeting of the Virtualization Boston Group (www.virtg.com)

Community Megaphone Events Feed

<geo:lat>42.3755187</geo:lat><geo:long>-71.2722920</geo:long><dc:coverage>MA</dc:coverage>

Cloud Computing - Jennifer Marsman of Microsoft

This event will be held on: 9/10/2009 at 11:15 AM, Eastern Time

Address: 1001 E. Initially released with .NET 3.0, it has been significantly enhanced in .NET 3.5 to support the various web programming models: SOAP, POX, WS-*, REST and RSS/Atom syndications.

In our session, we will talk about: WCF architecture, WCF bindings and configuration, hosting WCF services, WCF security and some design best practices. We will focus on SOAP and REST, but we will see examples of each of the programming models. We will also learn how to integrate our WCF services with the ASP.NET Membership service for authentication and authorization.
